NORTHWESTERN RWANDA

Rwanda's Mountain Paradise

Nestled in the northwest corner of Rwanda and bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) is home to the majestic Virunga Mountains and world-famous mountain gorillas.

Spanning over 160 km², this park was established in 1925, making it Africa's oldest national park. It harbors five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga range, with elevations ranging from 2,400m to 4,507m, creating diverse microclimates and ecosystems.

Beyond its extraordinary gorilla population, the park hosts golden monkeys, a rich variety of bird species, and stunning landscapes of bamboo forests, meadows, marshes and dramatic mountain terrain.

CONSERVATION EFFORTS

Protecting Rwanda's Natural Heritage

Rwanda's commitment to conservation has led to a remarkable recovery in the mountain gorilla population. From less than 250 individuals in the 1980s to over 1,000 today across the Virunga Mountains, these endangered primates represent one of conservation's greatest success stories.

Through a combination of anti-poaching initiatives, community involvement, and innovative tourism models that share revenue with local communities, Rwanda has created a sustainable framework for preservation.

Your visit directly contributes to these conservation efforts. 10% of all park fees go to community projects, while the remainder supports park management and gorilla protection efforts.
