Our Conservation Commitment

At Explorers of Africa, we believe that tourism and conservation are inseparable. Our mission extends beyond providing exceptional travel experiences – we are dedicated to protecting Rwanda's remarkable biodiversity and supporting the communities who serve as its guardians.

Rwanda stands as a global leader in conservation, from its pioneering mountain gorilla protection programs to its ambitious reforestation initiatives. We are proud to contribute to this legacy through our business practices and partnerships with local conservation organizations.

Every journey with us directly supports conservation efforts across Rwanda's national parks and protected areas, ensuring that the natural wonders you experience today will thrive for generations to come.

Our Conservation Initiatives

Mountain Gorilla Protection

We proudly support the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and Rwanda Development Board's gorilla conservation programs through financial contributions and sustainable tourism practices. A portion of every gorilla trekking experience booked through us directly supports anti-poaching units, habitat restoration, and community education.

Reforestation Projects

Through our partnership with One Tree Planted, we contribute to Rwanda's ambitious goal of increasing forest cover to 30% of total land area. For every tour booked, we plant ten native trees in buffer zones around national parks, helping to extend habitats and combat erosion and climate change impacts.

Community Conservation

We believe that successful conservation requires community engagement. Our programs support local initiatives that transform former poachers into eco-guards, train youth as conservation ambassadors, and develop sustainable livelihoods that reduce pressure on natural resources.

Rwanda's Conservation Success Stories

Mountain Gorilla conservation

Mountain Gorilla Recovery

Once on the brink of extinction with fewer than 250 individuals remaining in the 1980s, mountain gorillas have made a remarkable recovery. Today, the population exceeds 1,000 individuals, making them the only great ape species increasing in numbers.

This conservation success story is the result of Rwanda's innovative tourism model that channels visitor revenues directly into protection efforts, community benefits, and habitat conservation. It demonstrates how responsible tourism can be a powerful force for conservation.

Akagera National Park

Akagera's Rebirth

After nearly losing all its wildlife following the 1994 genocide, Akagera National Park has undergone a remarkable transformation. Through a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, the park has been revitalized.

Lions were reintroduced in 2015 and rhinos in 2017, making Akagera once again home to the Big Five. Poaching has been virtually eliminated, wildlife populations are thriving, and the park now generates significant tourism revenue that benefits surrounding communities.

Reforestation in Rwanda

National Reforestation

Rwanda has set an ambitious goal to increase forest cover to 30% of the country's total land area. Through initiatives like the annual National Forest Planting Day and the introduction of agroforestry techniques, the nation is making remarkable progress.

These reforestation efforts help combat soil erosion, improve water quality, sequester carbon, and create corridors connecting fragmented wildlife habitats. They serve as a model for how developing nations can pursue economic growth while enhancing environmental resilience.
