Rwanda's only savannah park and big five safari destination
Located along Rwanda's eastern border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park offers a complete contrast to the mountainous terrain found elsewhere in the country. Spanning 1,122 square kilometers, this stunning savannah landscape represents the largest protected wetland in central Africa.
Named after the Kagera River that flows along its eastern boundary, the park features a mesmerizing mosaic of swamps, lakes, woodlands, and open grasslands that provide habitat for a remarkable diversity of wildlife.
After years of conservation efforts and wildlife reintroductions, Akagera has been transformed into a true Big Five destination, offering visitors the classic African safari experience with the added benefit of low visitor numbers and pristine wilderness.

ENQUIRE NOWFollowing the 1994 genocide, Akagera National Park faced tremendous challenges as refugees returning to Rwanda settled in the park, leading to habitat loss and wildlife decline. By 2010, many species had been hunted to local extinction.
In 2010, African Parks partnered with the Rwanda Development Board to manage Akagera, implementing robust conservation initiatives and community engagement programs. This partnership has led to remarkable transformations.
Lions were reintroduced in 2015 after a 15-year absence, and black rhinos returned in 2017, restoring Akagera's status as a Big Five park. Wildlife populations have flourished, with elephants, giraffes, and other species thriving under protection.
